Sun Prairie, Wis., May 24---Kevin Thomas Jr. won the 30-lap "Danni Jo Thiel Memorial", Saturday Night at Angell Park Speedway. The event was co-sanctioned by the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series and The Zimbrick Chevrolet of Sun Prairie/Mid-State Equipment Badger Midget Series. It also opened the 69th season of racing at the facility.
Thomas earned the pole position for the event by winning the trophy dash, and his heat race earlier in the evening. Thomas then jumped into the lead at the start followed by teammate Christopher Bell. Fourth place running Justin Peck hit the Turn 2 wall and flipped on Lap 4, escaping injury.
On the restart Thomas held off Bell, until three laps later when Bell slowed and retired from the event. On the restart Thomas again pulled away from the field. A caution for spun cars, bunched up the field on Lap 12. Darren Hagen passed Thomas for the lead entering Turn 2 on the restart, but Thomas regained the lead before the lap was completed. .
Thomas began lapping the tail of the field on Lap 19, and continued his flawless run in his first midget event at the track. Thomas driving the Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian owned No.67 Bullet/Toyota finished ahead of POWRi points leader Hagen, Ryan Robinson also running in his first race at the track, Austin Brown, and Alex Bright.
“To finally win my first feature, and have it come here at Angell Park means so much to me, I can’t thank everyone at Keith Kunz Motorsports enough” said Thomas, who became the seventh different driver to win at Angell Park for Kunz.
Night two was cancelled Sunday Morning, with steady rain at the speedway and fore casted for the rest of the day and through the evening hours.
