Scotty Thiel - Wrecked at Wilmot

Unpredictable weather turned for the better as the skies stayed clear Saturday night at the Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, Wisconsin. Scotty and the Scott Thiel Motorsports team were ready to take on the 32 car field that showed up for the Bumper to Bumper IRA event. After drawing a 50 pill for qualifying, Scotty was the 22nd car out and laid down a very fast time of 13.990 which was sixth quick overall. The heat race was a struggle for Thiel after missing the transfer by one position but he made up for that by winning the B-Main by over a full straight. In the main event, Scotty charged his way up into the top five but after contact with the wall and getting hit my another car it ended his night with a torn up car.

Qualifying has not been the greatest so far for Scotty and the team in 2015 but they finally started to turn things around Saturday night after getting into the 13 second bracket which only six of the 32 cars were capable of doing so. Scotty went out later in the qualifying order and laid down a 13.990 which was sixth quick overall. “It feels good finally to have a decent qualifying run. I messed up a little in turn four and wasn’t on the throttle as hard as I should have been and I think that might have been that tenth and a half we needed for quick time.” Stated Thiel after his run.

The ten lap heat race event wasn’t as great as the race track was fairly slick and passing was difficult. Scotty started in the fifth position and did not get the start he wanted. The bottom side of the track was not his best line all night long and he struggled to get up to the top side of the track early on. He settled into the sixth position where he would stay all ten laps. He tried everything he could but every time that there was an opportunity to build up momentum to make the pass, the cars ahead would slide up and break the run. Scotty was forced to run the B-main event. Luckily, the B-main is lined up based on finish plus qualifying time so Thiel was able to start on the pole of the race. The green flag dropped and Scotty charged to turn one. He slid up to the top side and never looked back. He managed to pull away from the field by a full straight-a-way in only the first three laps. A caution came out with only five laps to go but that did not stop Thiel from building up a commanding lead once going back to green flag action. He charged hard and pulled away again and would win the B-main. That finish would allow Scotty to gain his qualifying time back for the A-main event and he would line up in the 11th position for the 30 lap A-main event.

The crew made little changes to the car before pushing out for the A-main event. Scotty felt very comfortable in the car and knew what the race track was like after running the B-main. The field was called into position and began to prepare for the drop of the green flag. They came out of turn four and charged down the front stretch. Scotty drove right to the top side coming out of turn two and began his battle forward. He was the only car early on driving on the very top side as he did in the B-main. It took a few laps to get a rhythm going but he started to pick his way forward car by car. A caution came out a few laps in and the field would have to get lined back up. After going back to green, Scotty charged the high side once again. He lost a little ground and tried moving down to the bottom of the track. It did not work well for him as he fell back a few spots and finally jumped back up to the high side and began his way back forward. With only eight laps to go, Scotty found himself sitting in the fifth position. He was charging hard on the very top side of the track but got too high coming out of turn two and hit the wall with the right rear tire. The car got sideways but he managed to hold on but then the front end slapped the wall and broke out. Scotty was doing his best to keep the car towards the wall but the front end folded under the car and shot him down into the racing groove. Thiel tucked in close as the field went by but one car could not avoid him and made very hard contact. Scotty climbed out of the car unhurt but the car was destroyed. It would be the end of the night for Thiel and the team. “I don’t really know what to call our luck right now at this point in the season. We finally started out good with qualifying, struggled in our heat, won the B by a mile and now this. We were so quick in the A. I know we had something for them. The car was working really well. Needed a caution late to bunch everyone back up and I think we had chance at least for a top three. We are in a slump right now and it’s frustrating but it’ll turn around hopefully soon.” A disappointed statement made by Scotty after the event.

Memorial Day weekend is now approaching and will lead the team on a traveling adventure. Friday night the team will head down to Plymouth, Indiana for the Earl Gaerte Memorial event with the Allstar Circuit of Champions. That is a $5,000 to win event. The team will then head back home and prepare for Sunday evening at the 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, WI with the IRA 410 Series.

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
