Brady Bacon – Gassing it Up!

(Bill W) May 18, 2015 – After a rough weekend of double duty at the Eldora Speedway May 8 and 9, Brady Bacon scored USAC win #3 of the season with the Hoffman Racing #69 at the Gas City Speedway in Indiana Friday. The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma native can consider that a calm before the storm, as he plans on six races in six nights starting Wednesday. The “Tony Hulman Classic” awaits the USAC sprint cars on Wednesday at the Terre Haute Action Track. Brady’s first Silver Crown start of the season will be Thursday aboard the Paul Martens #48 in the “Hoosier Hundred” at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. Three straight nights of All Stars action in his #99 starts at Plymouth Speedway in Indiana with the “Earl Gaerte Classic” on Friday. Saturday and Sunday, the All Stars move to Fremont Speedway in Ohio. The final race of the week will be on Monday, when the World of Outlaws visit Lawrenceburg Speedway in Indiana.

Brady was able to set the quick time of the night at Gas City on Friday. “We were good in qualifying,” he says. “The Hoffman car was easy to drive, and we ended up with another quick time (his fourth in USAC competition this year).”

He would run third in the heat race after starting sixth. “The heats are always tough at Gas City.” says Brady. “There’s usually not a whole lot of passing, so if you are starting in row three, just getting into the top four is a good thing.”
Brad would start sixth in the 30-lap feature. “We were kind of riding around there in fifth,” he says. “Everyone was just kind of running around the bottom. I wasn’t satisfied running there. I didn’t mind losing a couple spots in taking a chance of going up top. It ended up going really well up there.”

He caught the drivers in front of him by surprise. “I was up to second, and I was passing for the lead when the yellow came out,” says Brady. “That actually moved me back to fourth. I was a little worried that the guys in front of me would take my line away, but we were still good on the bottom.”

Now Brady would have to work to get back to the front. “We passed (Jon) Stanbrough in one and two on the restart down there, and then we got (Thomas) Meseraull on the top in three and four on the next lap,” he says. “We were able to get a good run on the bottom and get by (Dave) Darland (for the lead) there on lap 17.”

He would hold onto the win, but it wasn’t easy. “We were pretty good out there,” says Brady. “We had some moments in lapped traffic. The track really slicked off, which makes it harder to make a move there. They caught right back up to me in lapped traffic. Fortunately, I was able to clear a couple of lapped cars just in time. At the end, I was taking it easy a little bit, and Meseraull reeled me back in. Fortunately, we were able to hold on and get the win.”

The win was important for the Hoffman team and the defending USAC champs head to Terre Haute fourth in the standings. “Obviously, it was a good morale booster after a tough weekend at Eldora,” says Brady. “We’ve always been good on the big tracks, and now we’ve won two races on quarter-miles (the other came at Bloomington). It’s definitely encouraging. We’ve got a busy week ahead. We’re back in the Hoffman car on Wednesday, and then it’s my first ride in the Paul Martens #48 on Thursday. I’ll be in my own car for three nights with the All Stars and one with the World of Outlaws.”
