After a week off of racing the STM #64 sprint car team headed back to Beaver Dam Raceway where they had some unfinished business to take care of after having a broken rocker arm in the heat race event, last time in attendance. Scotty struggled early on in the night but made the main event and would come from 17th to 10th after 30 laps of straight green flag action.
IRA Qualifying was one of the closest ever recorded as positions 2-27 were within a half a second of each other. Scotty drew a 30 pill which set him 17th in the qualifying order. After charging hard to a 12.538 lap time, he was 18th quick overall. The overall qualifying attempt would place Thiel on the pole of the third heat race event. The start was not the greatest for Thiel as he would settle in second position coming out of turn two. He charged down the backstretch and some contact was made as he was moving up the track to enter into turn three. It threw Scotty off a little but he managed to hold onto the position. A few laps later, the leader went up in smoke and Thiel had to check up for just a second but fell back two spots but was settled into the third position with only a few laps to go. Struggling to keep the handle of the car, Scotty came across the line in third but missed out on the invert opportunity to start within the top eight of the 30 lap A-main event. The crew went to work to change the car around and make it better for Scotty to drive. He would go on to start 17th in the A-main event.
Tacky track conditions held all night long and would make for a very fast A-main event. The field lined up and prepared to take the green flag. Charging out of turn four, it was go time but that quickly was stopped as a few cars got upside down going into turn one. A red flag came out to clean up the wreck and the field would get a new lineup. Attempt number two was a better success as the field made it through turn one clean and clear. Scotty was stuck on the bottom side but quickly moved his way up to the top side and gained some ground. The track stayed pretty fast all race long which made passing a little harder because the track was good everywhere any car went. Scotty charged his way up to the top ten but struggled for several laps as the track was blocked on both top on bottom grooves. He lost a lot of laps but finally got around the group of cars and checked out. He worked his way all the way up to the sixth position until he had to check up for a car and jumped the cushion. Scotty almost put the car into the wall but saved it and lost a lot of ground. He fell all the way back to tenth position as the white flag came out. With little time left, Scotty could not regain all of the ground he made and settled for a tenth place finish as he crossed the line taking the checkered flag. “We struggled early on after trying a few things with the car. The car felt good in qualifying but we weren’t extremely quick. Had to play catch up all night long. It made for the main to be very difficult especially coming from the back on a pretty tacky track. We finished the entire night which is good, just wished our finish would have been better. We had a great car in the main but the results didn’t show it.” Thiel mentioned after the main.
Next up on the team’s schedule is tentatively Friday May 15th at Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, IL with the NSL series and then followed up by Saturday night at the Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, WI with the IRA. Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
