Inside Line Promotions – PETALUMA, Calif. (May 11, 2015) – Chase Johnson was on the path of powering to his first career top five with the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series last Saturday before bad luck returned.

Johnson had driven the Shawn and Cyndi Thomas owned sprint car to just outside the top five approximately two thirds of the way through the main event at Petaluma Speedway when a steering problem forced him to the pits early.

“The crew had the car rolling really, really well,” he said. “I definitely believe a top five was in grasp and a podium would have been possible with the way we were moving forward and how fast we were. We just have to shake this bad luck and we’ll start landing on podiums and getting top fives.”

Johnson opened the event by qualifying 15th quickest.

“In qualifying I missed my line,” he said. “We ended up going through a really rough part of the track, which was just driver error.”

That lined him up on the inside of the third row of a heat race, which transferred the top four to the main event.

“We were in fifth for most of the race,” he said. “I got around Willie (Croft) or he had some sort of trouble and that’s how we got fourth late in the race. It was a big improvement from qualifying.”

Johnson started the main event on the inside of the eighth row, but he quickly advanced toward the front.

“Me and Carson (Macedo), who started right in front of me, made our way to the front pretty quickly,” he said. “Unfortunately I got into a rut and when I went into the next corner I had a tough time steering. The only thing we could guess caused it was how rough the track was. There were a lot of holes and the cushion was really rough.”

Johnson pulled in with a 21st-place result.

He is set to compete this Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., for the Chris and Brian Faria Memorial with the King of the West.
