Covington Motorsports- Glenpool, Ok. (May 6, 2015) Matt Covington and the Covington Motorsports team scored a top-5 with a fourth place finish during the Rock N Roll 50 at the “Ditch” this past weekend.
The night started out with Matt powering his A-Rock Materials/Triple X chassis to the front and grabbing the night’s fifth heat race win. The heat results put Covington in the redraw where he drew the 5th starting spot for the feature.
“I knew we were going to have our work cut out for us after the redraw,” stated Matt. “It was going to be a long race but it’s hard to advance once you’re in the top-5 in these deals because everybody has good equipment and has shown speed this year.”
With the drop of the green, Covington committed to the bottom and fought to battle upfront with the leaders. Covington worked to stay in the top-5 for most of the early stages of the race in his Wesmar/Schoenfeld headers machine. At the cross flags and halfway point of the race, Matt found himself hanging tough and battling between the fourth and fifth positions. With the race winding down and only a handful of laps or so to go, Covington had quietly worked himself into the third position. At the finish of the race and checkers, Matt ultimately had to settle for the 4th position after losing a spot during a late race restart in the closing laps.
“The track was tricky in the feature,” stated Matt. “It was tacky off the corners but slick getting in and through the center. There were two places you could run. You could either run right around the bottom or go up top and rail the fence, trying not to catch the wall on corner exit. I had hand surgery in the winter to repair a nerve and tendon issue from a wreck a few years back at Knoxville. My hand strength is still not 100% and the long 50 lap race gave me some trouble with my grip. Once the race went on and unfolded, I just thought with my hand hurting and us being a little snug, I would just do my best to run nice smooth laps on the bottom. It was a little harder to pass down there and we were tight popping wheelies off the corner a couple different times during the race. But we stayed out of trouble and survived and I will take a 4th place finish and solid top 5 after the start of the season we have had. Honestly I am happy to move up in points and excited for the upcoming races.”
