Inside Line Promotions – HIGHLANDS, Texas (May 5, 2015) – Channin Tankersley registered his first podium finish of the season last Friday with the ASCS Gulf South Region.
Tankersley scored a second-place finish at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas, where he opened the night by earning a heat race victory for the third consecutive race.
“It went well Friday night,” he said. “We were pretty happy. Of course we wanted to win, but I’m not going to complain about second place.”
Tankersley’s heat race win locked him into the feature redraw, in which he pulled the No. 5 to line up on the inside of the third row for the main event.
“I made a little ground up on the start and picked one off here and there,” he said. “With about 10 laps to go I was up to second. I tried some different stuff on the track and caught the leader. I got underneath him one time, but really just ran out of laps.”
Saturday didn’t fare as well for Tankersley, who destroyed a race car while competing in the top five during the ASCS Gulf South Region feature at Battleground Speedway.
“Something broke in the steering going down the back straightaway and the car just never turned,” he said. “They had to red flag the race and it took them about 30 minutes to get my car out of the fence.”
Tankersley kicked off the night by rallying from sixth to second place in a heat race. That gave him a spot in the feature redraw and for the second straight night he drew the No. 5.
“We were up to second on like the third lap,” he said. “They had a yellow and after that yellow around Lap 5 or 6 the car started acting weird in turns one and two. Then going down the back straightaway I heard a loud pop and it just never turned.”
The violent crashed resulted in a 23rd-place result for Tankersley, who will return to competition during an ASCS Gulf South Region tripleheader on May 22 at Heart O’ Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas; May 23 at Shady Oaks Speedway in Goliad, Texas; and May 24 at Battleground Speedway in Highlands, Texas, for the 13th annual Memorial Day Classic.
