Inside Line Promotions – HIGHLANDS, Texas (May 5, 2015) – Ray Allen Kulhanek capped last weekend’s ASCS Gulf South Region doubleheader by earning the Hard Charger Award at Battleground Speedway.
Kulhanek rallied from 15th to sixth place during the main event at the fast track on Saturday.
“We were good, but had another unfortunate circumstance,” he said. “We lost brakes about five or six laps in and I was just trying to maintain and finish the race. I was just trying to keep pace and pick off as many cars as I could. When I’d catch somebody I’d go the opposite way they did to keep from anyone locking up in front of me and not being able to stop. We got fortunate and made our way up to sixth.
“It makes it tough inside the car because you have no control over your wheel spin. When you go to shut down to run the bottom you can’t run it in as hard as you want to. It’s not real bad running the cushion unless the car starts getting tight on you, which it was doing to me in turns three and four.”
The sixth-place finish closed a challenging weekend for Kulhanek, who drew a high number to start the heat race on Saturday as well as on Friday at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas.
Kulhanek advanced from eighth to sixth place during Saturday’s heat race, but he was unable to move forward while starting sixth in a heat race on Friday.
“Friday night was my fault in the heat race,” he said. “I was going off my gut feeling of what we should be doing since I was starting in the back. I wanted to keep the car freed up to be able to turn the car. It was too free and I couldn’t really get any drive from the center of the turn off.”
Kulhanek finished where he started in the heat race, which relegated him to the eighth starting position in the B Main.
“I got up into a transfer spot in the B Main and one of the guys I had passed just ran out of brains,” he said. “He ran me smooth over going into turn one about three laps in. It was a shame.”
Kulhanek got upside down in the incident and he was unable to finish the consolation race.
“The whole weekend was a big disappointment,” he said. “We salvaged a sixth on Saturday, but I really want to get back to Victory Lane.”
Kulhanek will return to action during an ASCS Gulf South Region tripleheader on May 22 at Heart O’ Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas; May 23 at Shady Oaks Speedway in Goliad, Texas; and May 24 at Battleground Speedway in Highlands, Texas, for the 13th annual Memorial Day Classic.
