Inside Line Promotions – COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (May 3, 2015) – Trey Starks came up one spot short of scoring his third consecutive victory last Saturday at Cottage Grove Speedway.
Starks finished with a runner-up result at the bullring, where he picked up his first win of the season the prior weekend.
“It was pretty frustrating because we were one spot away from winning three in a row,” he said. “We really wanted that win, but I guess one spot short isn’t all that bad. To be fast and able to compete with Roger (Crockett) at Cottage Grove is a win in itself.”
Starks kicked off the night by setting quick time during qualifying on the quarter-mile track. He then advanced from fourth to second place in a heat race.
“The way they line up the feature is straight up from your heat race,” he said. “We finished second in the first heat so that put us fourth since there were three heats. Then they do an inversion roll of zero to 10. They rolled an eight so we lined up fifth.”
Starks quickly maneuvered into second place before a miscue cost him several positions.
“We were running second around the fifth lap and I drove off the end of the track in turns one and two,” he said. “We fell back a handful of positions there. We ended up getting back up to third before a late restart.
“The bottom was dominant all night. Coming off two wins, we really wanted to get another. I thought I’d go and try the top on a restart. It worked really well. I got by Kyle (Miller) and pulled even with Roger. Coming down the frontstretch I ended up tagging the wall twice. That was with about three or four laps to go and that closed our chances of winning.”
Starks settled for his fifth top-five finish of the season and his fourth in the last four races.
He is slated to compete this Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash., where he won a week ago.
