Though the final result of a DQ didn’t show it, the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team showed plenty of speed at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas last Saturday. Wayne would time in 11th quick with the World of Outlaws. In the feature, an unavoidable tangle resulted in pulling into the work area in the wrong location. This week, Wayne plans on taking on the Outlaws at the Salina Highbanks Speedway in Oklahoma before heading to “The Ditch” in West Memphis, Arkansas for the “Rock ‘N Roll 50” with the ASCS National Series.
A multi-time winner at Devil’s Bowl, Wayne started the night well in qualifying. “Our 410 program is definitely headed in a great direction,” he says. “We had a good lap there and laid down 11th quick. That put us on the front row of the heat. I’m really happy with the way the car’s been driving. We had been struggling with the 410. Winning at Burlington sure didn’t hurt my confidence.”
Eleventh quick meant a start on the pole beside Steve Kinser in the heat. “On the first start, I got a big jump on them,” says Wayne. “Someone spun out, and we had to redo it. Steve laid back a little bit, and got a run on me. He beat me on the start. I actually got a run on him coming off of two, but we touched wheels. I about spun out, and that got us back into fourth right off the bat. We made it through the heat, which was better than spinning out and going to the back.”
Wayne was to start outside row six for the main event. “JoJo Helberg was starting right in front of us,” he says. “He’d never been to Dallas, and I knew starting a feature coming off of turn four…if you’ve never been there, you don’t know what’s happening and you hit the fence. Sure enough, he hit it. I tried to dodge and miss him, and when I did, I got together with the 41 car (Jamie Veal).”
That resulted in a trip to the work area…or at least what he thought was the work area. “We had a flat and the red came out because Sammy (Swindell) turned over,” says Wayne. “I drove off the back straightaway off of turn three. That’s where the work area is for ASCS races. I went in behind the wall and changed the tire. They came and told us we were disqualified, because we weren’t in the work area. Their work area was off of turn two. They did tell us that in the driver’s meeting, but I was just so used to going to turn three…it was a mistake.”
With things going well, Wayne is looking forward to racing this Friday and Saturday. “We normally go pretty well at Salina,” he says. “The last few times we’ve been good in West Memphis too. Last time we were there we got our face smashed in with someone’s muffler. We were able to finish and go from 24th to sixth that night. We hope to do better without the smashed in face part this time!”
