Inside Line Promotions – GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (April 19, 2015) – Nobody has been as dominant during World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series races at Devil’s Bowl Speedway than Sammy Swindell, who returns to the half-mile track this weekend for the $20,000-to-win Texas Outlaw Nationals.
Swindell will drive for Donnie Cooper on Friday and Saturday at the unique track, where the veteran has won at least one World of Outlaws feature in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. A win this weekend would give him triumphs in each of the last five decades.
“That’d be pretty good,” he said. “I think the biggest reason (for success) is it’s not an oval. The turns are quite a bit different. You have to drive the car. You can’t get your car set up to go around the corners on both ends perfectly. It’s more in the driver’s hands.”
Swindell has earned a World of Outlaws leading 12 feature victories, including a win during five of the first eight Outlaws main events at the track.
“It’s definitely easier going to all the places I’ve won multiple times,” he said. “You never know how it’s going to turn out. Qualifying can put you at an advantage or disadvantage. I’ll be confident knowing we’ll have a good car and I think I can drive the race track as good as anyone.”
Swindell finished third and ninth, respectively, during the World of Outlaws return to Devil’s Bowl Speedway last year following a 10-year hiatus.
After winning the second-ever Outlaws race at the track on Sept. 16, 1978, Swindell also recorded a win in 1979, 1980, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1992, 1994, 1999 and 2000. He won three of four World of Outlaws races at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in 1980.
Additionally, Swindell claimed a 360ci sprint car feature win at the track in 2010 to give him five decades with at least one feature win.
