Inside Line Promotions – CALISTOGA, Calif. (April 14, 2015) – Kevin Swindell highlighted last weekend by charging from 25th to a 10th-place result during a World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series event at Calistoga Speedway.
Swindell, who was driving for Roth Motorsports, opened the weekend doubleheader at the scenic half-mile oval on Saturday by qualifying 25th quickest.
“We were okay in hot laps and we tried to work with it for qualifying,” he said. “I probably didn’t make as good of a lap as I should have to get us in the heat race inversion. Then in the heat race we kind of missed it.”
Swindell advanced from seventh to sixth place, which was only spot out of locking into the main event, in a heat race. That relegated him to the Last Chance Showdown, where he spent most of the race battling for the fourth-and-final transfer position before ending sixth.
Roth Motorsports then took a provisional to start last in the main event.
“We got it a little better for the feature,” Swindell said. “It was a tricky race track. There wasn’t a lot of grip so it was whether you could carry speed and I found a way to do that. Most of the cars I passed were within a lap of a restart. It was about being in the right spot. I think I was definitely braver earlier. Nobody jumped up there (to the cushion) in the beginning. I think most guys were timid of it and I was able to get up there and carry speed.”
Swindell picked up 15 positions during the main event to garner the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.
He returned to Calistoga Speedway on Sunday, but was quickly behind the eight ball because of a high pill draw that determined the qualifying order.
“We drew awful,” he said. “We were five cars from the end. Nobody back that far made the inversion.”
Swindell timed in 28th quickest. However, he advanced from seventh to fifth place in a heat race to lock himself into the main event, which he started 23rd.
“We took a big swing at the setup to try to make some difference for the feature,” he said. “We just didn’t have it. We were maybe ok by the end of it, but initially didn’t get going enough to stay up there. It’s always disappointing to run like that. I feel like I should have been better. We just never could find a balance to make it easy to drive all weekend, but those things happen with a new team. I want to thank Dennis and Teresa Roth as well as Todd for the opportunity.”
Swindell is scheduled to race for Brandon Berryman on April 24-25 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, for the Texas Outlaw Nationals with the World of Outlaws.
