“Friday night didn’t go as planned but at least we came back with a solid finish on Saturday,” stated Covington.
On Friday Matt started the night off with the 3rd place heat finish after a deep starting spot on a fast race track. The end result landed Matt in the night’s redraw.
After the redraw Matt would start the feature from the 7th starting spot.
As the green flag waived Matt worked to advance forward. The track got extremely slick and took rubber soon after. Covington would battle the tight race car before finally surrendering and pulling off late in the feature due to the missed setup and ill handling car.
Matt and the team loaded up after Friday’s feature and got some rest before waking up early Saturday morning and service the car for a trip to Little Rock’s I-30 Speedway.
After a good draw, Covington would start up front in the heat. Matt would take advantage of the rare starting position and win the heat going away by a full straightaway.
The heat race win would start Matt fifth for the night A-Main. As the feature got underway Matt would do what he could to gain spots and move forward. The task proved to be difficult as the track became very rough with the racing grove right around the top. Covington battled inside the top-5 most of the race with the leaders before surrendering a few spots late when he caught a rut trying to pass for third. After saving the car and falling back in line, Matt would ultimately cross the checkers in 6th place.
"On Friday we just missed the setup for the feature to be honest,” quoted Covington. “The track got slick in a hurry and took rubber quicker than we expected and was just way too tight. On Saturday we were good early and decent late just the track was rough and I caught a couple big ruts at bad times during the feature. We did learn a few things and are gaining on the setup. My goal right now is just to get everything ready and go to these next few races and do our best to rebound and consistently be in the top-5 where we should be and need to be.”
