Inside Line Promotions – ATTICA, Ohio (April 7, 2015) – Saturday didn’t end as well as Caleb Helms hoped, but he is pleased by the improvement of his sprint car.
Helms showcased speed throughout the All Star Circuit of Champions event at Attica Raceway Park, where his team made a big leap in the handling of his race car compared to the first few races in February when the team competed in Florida.
“The car felt different,” he said. “We’ve made some strides with the car and I feel very good about that. I’m exciting about what the car was like. From hot laps I could tell we had a fast car.”
Helms qualified third quickest in his group – fourth overall – to line up on the outside of the front row of his heat race. He finished third in the heat to lock into the main event and because his qualifying result was good enough, Helms advanced into the dash.
He was then given the No. 1 during the revenge draw format of the dash draw to garner the pole position. Unfortunately, Helms made contact with an infield tire on the opening lap of the dash. The contact was too much to overcome and he was credited with an 11th-place result, which lined him up on the inside of the sixth row for the main event.
“It was just a silly mistake and it cost us a good starting spot for the feature,” he said. “I had a first-place car and everybody worked really hard to put me in a good position. I just made a mistake.”
Helms rebounded at the start of the main event as he neared the top five during the opening laps.
“I was up to seventh after that first red,” he said. “Then I got into the slick stuff and seemed to do the same thing three times in a row.”
Helms spun approximately a quarter of the way through the feature, which relegated him to the back of the main event. He was unable to get a handle on the car during the remainder of the race and ended with an 18th-place finish.
Helms plans to compete this Saturday at Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio.
