Inside Line Promotions – YAKIMA, Wash. (April 7, 2015) – Trey Starks scored his first top five of the season last Saturday with the Summer Thunder Sprint Series.
Starks capped a long night at Yakima Dirt Track by earning a fifth-place result during his first race of the season in his home state.
“With the track circumstances the way they were I think we had a pretty good night,” he said. “After all the problems fifth is a pretty good finish.”
The night began with his time not registering during qualifying because of a transponder problem. Starks was forced to put a new transponder on his car and attempt qualifying again. While he timed in fifth quickest, he was penalized by not being allowed in the heat race inversion.
That lined him up on the inside of the fourth row of a heat race on a track that was already caked in rubber.
“On the warmup lap I blew a power steering line so I had to run that whole race without power steering,” he said.
Starks finished where he started – seventh – in the heat race, which relegated him to the B Main. He placed second in the consolation race to transfer into the main event, where he lined up on the outside of the fifth row.
“They tried to water the track, but it didn’t really work,” he said. “It was so hard it didn’t really matter. We got three spots on the start around the top side. There was a little bit of moisture building and I knew everybody would dive to the bottom. We picked some off and then got two more throughout the race. It was a patience game. You’d wait for someone to make a mistake, you’d drive under them and wait again. We weren’t the fastest car, but we had a pretty consistent car.”
It marked the fifth top five in the last seven races at the track for Starks, who will return to California this weekend for a tripleheader.
He will race at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville on Friday with the Ocean Sprints. Starks finished 10th in 2011 during his lone race at the bullring.
“I remember it being a pretty cool track,” he said. “It’s definitely a tight, California bullring. We need an early win this season and that’s what we’re going to try to do”
The weekend will wrap up on Saturday and Sunday at Calistoga Speedway in Calistoga for the Wine Country Outlaw Showdown with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series. His only time racing at the half-mile track was in 2011, when he charged from 23rd to 13th with the World of Outlaws.
“Calistoga is a track I really like,” he said. “It’s big and fast. It’s one of the biggest tracks we run on anywhere. It’ll be good to use some of the big track info I got from running in Pennsylvania last year.”
