Inside Line Promotions – WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (April 7, 2015) – White Lightning Motorsports had a roller-coaster weekend as Jamie Ball opened the season at a pair of Midwest tracks last weekend.
“I would say our weekend was full of ups and downs,” he said. “Overall I wasn’t too upset with how the weekend went. We showed lots of speed and lots of promise. The more we race these different tracks, the success will come.”
Ball kicked off the weekend last Friday at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., with the Carpetland Nebraska 360 Sprints. He advanced from sixth to fourth place in his heat race before being caught up in an incident that relegated him to the back of the field. A seventh-place finish in the heat relegated Ball into a B Main, where he charged from sixth to earn one of the two transfer positions into the main event.
“We’re spoiled a lot at Knoxville Raceway with how nice and smooth the track is each week,” he said. “At I-80 it was really rough. It was something I wasn’t used to. I had a restart with about five laps to go and I cowboyed up and put it on the top side. I was able to power around second and third to get the transfer.”
That lined Ball up last – 24th – for the main event.
“We tightened the car up a little bit because I figured I’d have to be on the bottom,” he said. “I passed a few guys and a few guys fell out. It was more or less a goal to get some laps.”
Ball ended with a 16th-place result.
White Lightning Motorsports ventured to 34 Raceway on Saturday for the Sprint Invaders season opener and Ball promptly won his heat race and the dash. He then pulled the No. 1 to signify no inversion for the main event, which he started on the pole.
“We were definitely one of the fastest cars at least up until the main,” he said. “As everyone knows I’m a Knoxville guy. I don’t have a lot of experience on the short tracks. I led the first three laps until Paul Nienhiser passed me on the bottom. I figured I needed to move around a little bit and I just really struggled to run the bottom. I tried to run the middle and I fell back to seventh. We had a restart with about five laps to go and everybody checked up. I jumped Tony Shilling’s left rear and it bent my drag link.”
Ball limped home to a 12th-place result with the damaged car.
“Overall it was a successful night that gave us a lot of confidence,” he said. “The car is there. I just have to put a whole night together.”
He will take part in Knoxville Raceway’s practice night this Saturday before racing the half-mile oval’s season opener on April 18.
