Rainouts were the norm for Wayne Johnson in March. After getting a pair of dates washed out in Oklahoma, even the traditional spring ASCS show at Devil’s Bowl in Mesquite, Texas was a wash. The Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team was ready for the NCRA opener last Saturday night at 81 Speedway near Wichita, Kansas and took home a runner-up finish in the $6,000 to win feature event.
Wayne was happy about the track conditions in Wichita on Saturday. “C. Ray (Hall) has done a lot of work on that place,” he says. “It’s really nice. There was no rubber Saturday. One end was sticky and the other was slick. You had to move around. It was really a racy, race track.”
It needed to be in the heat. After drawing a starting spot in row five, Wayne was able to start seventh. He would charge to second, earning high passing point honors for the night. “We actually should have won the thing,” he admits. “I was able to run (Jon) Agan down, and I messed up a couple of times trying to get by him. I was right on him at the end.”
The high point mark would put him on the pole for the main event. “We were able to lead the first four or five laps before the caution came out,” says Wayne. “On the restart, Sammy (Swindell) bonsaied the top and got by me. (Danny) Lasoski passed us both at that point.”
Wayne was able to gather himself and move forward again. “We were able to get back by Sammy,” he says. “Towards the end of the race, we were able to run Lasoski down in traffic. I thought I had something for him, but the caution came out. On the restart, he was too good in clean air. We were second by about ten car lengths. They said we both checked out on the rest of the field.”
This weekend will see the team competing in a pair of ASCS-Red River region events. On Friday, Red River Speedway in Wichita Falls, Texas plays host before the group moves on to Black Hawk Casino Speedway in Meeker, Oklahoma. “It’s been twenty years since I’ve been to Meeker,” says Wayne. “I don’t know that I ever won a race there. I don’t know if it’s even the same track, but the only time I’ve been to Wichita Falls to run a race…I was driving the Barry Grabel car and had it won with two to go. Shane Stewart spun out to cause a caution, and on the restart, Gary Wright beat me. I had a big lead. That’s the only time I remember going there. These aren’t traditional sprint car tracks, but we’ll go have some fun.”
