Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team are headed back to the Midwest after their west coast trip with the World of Outlaws. After a big win in Tucson, the team’s results didn’t necessarily show it, but compared to a year ago when they suffered torn up cars and an injured driver, things went well. The Grain Valley, Missouri is gearing up for a two-night event with the Nebraska 360 Sprint Series this weekend at I-80 Speedway near Greenwood.
Last year, you tore up a car and yourself a little bit at Tulare. Things went better for you there on March 13 and 14.
We just didn’t get qualified the first night (23rd). We missed transferring through the heat, but made it through the B. The way the track looked and everything, we decided to make a couple of laps in the feature and pull off. It ended up being a good omen, because I think eight or nine cars ended up getting torn up.
The second night went better in qualifying anyway.
We were able to come out and lay a good lap down the second night, even though we pulled a late number. We ended up second in the heat. I think we were running eighth or ninth in the feature when we had a restart. I tried to make a bold move and go three-wide, and ran out of real estate. That tore out our front axle and unfortunately, tore some other guys up too. It seems like at Tulare, we have some car speed at times, but not a lot of luck.
I know FVP was involved in the events in Stockton on March 21 and 22.
It’s always important when FVP is there to sponsor the race, and they were at Stockton. The first night, we really weren’t good all night long. We ended up finding out we had a steering issue. We were able to find that for the next night.
Things went better on Sunday.
The car handled a little better. We did have to run the B, but we got out of there. We were able to sneak out a fifteenth place finish. Overall, it was one of the toughest weekends we’ve had. It wasn’t that we got tore up, we were just either too tight or too loose. We never really made the right adjustments. When the checkered flag flew, we were ready to get out of there.
I know you had a lot of people anxious to see you in Stockton.
On the upside, things are getting bigger and better with FVP. It was great to have their customers and employees there. I think we had about 150 the first night, and 100 the second. We were eager to get out there and thank those people.
Things wrapped up for you at Silver Dollar Speedway Saturday night with the Mini-Gold Cup.
We’ve run decent at Chico a time or two. This time, we were about a tenth of a second off in qualifying. We were out pretty early. The track built a curb and got faster, which I never would have guessed going into the night. We ended up 23rd quick.
You moved forward in the heat and the feature though.
We were able to get through the heat. We made some wholesale changes before the feature. I think at one point we were up to 13th. It kind of felt like we were going in the right direction. There was a caution, and we just couldn’t go anywhere. Some rubber was laid down, and everyone got in line. We ended up 17th.
How would you assess your trip out west?
If you look at the stats on how we ran, especially in California, it would look like we ran poorly. We didn’t have the best results, but we were far better out there than we were last time. We didn’t tear anything up, and I’m in good health. We were able to try some things and we learned a lot.
You have to be looking forward to getting back on a big track at I-80 Speedway this weekend.
I-80 has always been a track that we’ve had some success at. We haven’t won there in a bit, and it will be a tough field of cars. It will be nice to get out there on the half-mile and air out these Charlie Garrett 360’s and see how they run.
