Inside Line Promotions – PARK CITY, Kan. (March 29, 2015) – Kevin Swindell was on pace for a top-five finish during his first winged sprint car race of the season before he was caught up in an incident on the final lap during Saturday’s NCRA race at 81 Speedway.

Swindell, who was driving for Jeff Smith, had rebounded from a B Main to rally inside the top five of the main event when he was spun on the backstretch during the final lap of the 5th annual Air Capital Shootout.

“We got up to another competitor and it was like he quit racing,” he said. “He’d run through the middle of turns one and two and slide across. You couldn’t slide him and if you went in on the top you had to stop for him. I got across in front of him a couple of times, but he’d be able to get turned back by me. On the last lap I got a run off turn two and got next to him and he kept leaning on me until he had my front tire in his headers.”

The spin, which Swindell completed to keep going in order to finish the race under power, relegated him to an 11th-place result and stymied a great rebound from a sour start to the night.

“We were awful in hot laps and the heat race wasn’t a lot better,” he said. “Plus getting stuck with my dad, (Jeremy) Campbell and (Dusty) Zomer in the heat didn’t help.”

Swindell, who started fifth in his heat race, finished fourth behind those three drivers. That relegated him to a B Main, which he won to transfer into the 16th starting position for the main event.

“We got pretty decent for the B Main,” he said. “I think the A Main is when we fine-tuned the setup instead of just swinging for the fence.”

Swindell spent the first half of the feature maneuvering from 16th to fifth place before he raced the closing laps in the spirited battle just outside the podium.

Swindell, who is planning to compete in a NASCAR event in the near future, is unsure of his next sprint car race.
