[b World of Outlaws Wrap-Up: Oil City Cup at Castrol Raceway]

Racking up the wins: Joey Saldana picked up his 14th and 15th wins of the season over the weekend during the Oil City Cup at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, adding to what is now a career high number of triumphs with the World of Outlaws. The native of Brownsburg, Indiana leads the series in wins, with three-time and defending series champion Donny Schatz next on the list with 12 victories. Saldana is currently third in points as the Gold Rush continues next weekend at Skagit Speedway in Washington where he has won a couple of times in his career including last season.
“My goal coming into this season was to just win races,” said Saldana. “You hear Donny Schatz say that you have to win races to win championships. We’ve won a lot of races, but are not in a position to win a championship. A lot more goes into winning a championship than just winning races. I know he says that, but it’s not true. You definitely have to eliminate a lot of situations that are out of your control. Our goal is to win races and if we can win more races than him, then I think we’ll accomplish something even if he wins the championship. They are the team to beat and he is the guy that you are trying to knock off every race. As long as we are winning, I’ll be happy.”
On the right track: Jason Meyers finished second in the finale of the Oil City Cup and was sixth in the opener to remain second in the series championship standings. He also gained nine bonus points over the weekend for being quickest in time trials on Saturday night and second fastest in the opener on Friday. He is currently tied with series point leader Donny Schatz for the series lead with 42 Top-10 finishes and is 86 points behind the three-time and defending series champion as he chases his first title. Meyers has finished in the Top-10 in 22 of the last 24 World of Outlaws events.
“We’re right there where we need to be, we’re just not getting the breaks unfortunately,” shared Meyers. “We’ll keep fighting and we’ll keep digging. We’re going out west where we are from and hopefully we can get some wins and get closer to Donny (Schatz) in that championship.”
Team cars: Jason Sides brought down his second car for the Oil City Cup this past weekend with Washington native Jayme Barnes behind the wheel. Sides opened the Oil City Cup by setting fast time in the opener, while finishing eighth. Both he and Barnes made the Crane Cams Dash in that event. In the finale, Sides was third fastest in time trials and came home fourth in the main event with Barnes finishing 10th.
Truly the best: Joey Saldana picked up his first career win in Canada on Friday night besting 20-time series champion Steve Kinser and three-time and defending series titlist Donny Schatz, after getting the jump on 2001 series champion Danny Lasoski at the start. With one of the strongest fields ever assembled in the 31-year history of the World of Outlaws, Saldana took great pride in adding another track to the list of speedways he has won at in his career with the series.
“If you want to see good racing, this is what it is,” said Saldana on Friday night. “The World of Outlaws. That’s why Kasey Kahne has two cars out here. It’s a great sport and this is where he came from. Obviously that is where his love is, short track racing. This is where it’s at.”
Filling in: Toni Lutar filled in for Jac Haudenschild over the weekend in the No. R19 machine for the Carnahan Motorsports team, after unforeseen circumstances prevented Haudenschild, who won at Castrol Raceway in 2008, from making the trip to Canada. Haudenschild received 50 “Extenuating circumstance points” each night in the driver’s standings and is currently eighth. The 2009 inductee into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame will be back in action with the World of Outlaws this coming weekend at Skagit Speedway in Washington.
4th Annual Oil City Cup dates announced: The fourth annual Oil City Cup at Castrol Raceway will take place on August 27-28, 2010 at the state-of-the-art 3/8-mile located just outside of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Five different drivers have won in the six World of Outlaws A-Feature events contested at the track, with Joey Saldana becoming the first two-time winner when he swept the two-day event this past weekend.
Meet & Greet with the Canadian fans: Prior to the finale of the Oil City Cup, World of Outlaws drivers took part in a Meet & Greet with the fans on the midway with a number of teams displaying their cars for the fans to get an up close look at an 850-plus horsepower sprint car. A picture perfect day was in store with fans young and old alike meeting their favorite drivers and getting autographs and photos.
“Thanks to all the fans for coming out here this weekend, this was an incredible group of fans,” said Jason Meyers after Saturday night’s race. “It makes a long trip worthwhile to see these people come out and enjoy the races.”
