Inside Line Promotions – GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (March 24, 2015) – Sammy Swindell has a dominant track record at 81 Speedway.
Swindell claimed the first five World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series races in the early 1980s at the 3/8-mile, semi-banked oval in Park City, Kan., where he will return for the first time in as long as he can remember this Saturday for the 5th annual Air Capital Shootout with the NCRA.
“I’ve got some pretty good memories of being around there when I drove for LaVern Nance,” he said. “I used to drive there quite a bit in the 1970s and 1980s. I wound up with quite a few fans and friends out there.”
Swindell will pilot a sprint car for Donnie Cooper this weekend, which will mark Swindell’s first winged sprint car race since last August when he announced his retirement from full-time racing. The duo was going to pair up for two races in Mississippi earlier this month, but the weekend was washed out by storms.
Saturday’s race, which pays an NCRA-record $6,000 to win, has Swindell jogging his memory of the track.
“It can be a bunch of race tracks at one time,” he said. “The racing line can change and the surface can change quite a bit. We were there one time and it started raining. They kept us running and it was pretty slippery. I jumped above the cushion and ran around there for a couple of laps before they called it.”
In addition to the five World of Outlaws victories at 81 Speedway from 1980-83, Swindell was also victorious there with the premier sprint car series in 1991.
