Inside Line Promotions – STOCKTON, Calif. (March 23, 2015) – Dominic Scelzi pushed himself to the limit last weekend by competing in a trio of races.
Scelzi, who was fresh from being involved in a scary fire that left second and third-degree burns on his left leg the previous weekend, scored a top 10 last Friday at Marysville Raceway in Marysville, Calif., before capping the weekend by advancing into the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series feature at Stockton Dirt Track on Sunday.
“All I really did all weekend was sit, jump in a car and then sit,” he said. “It was a long weekend. My leg hurts a lot. I’m sure it hindered the healing process. It’s one of those things where I felt like I needed to race and I’m glad I did it.”
Last weekend opened with Scelzi qualifying 10th quickest in the Dan Monhoff owned sprint car at Marysville Raceway.
“We had a really good car,” he said. “We timed in decent and we were able to win the heat race, which put us in the dash.”
Scelzi then advanced from fourth to second place in the dash to line up on the outside of the front row of the main event.
“For the majority of the feature I was running third,” he said. “I was nose to tail with the top two in traffic with about four laps to go. The guy in second slipped off the bottom. I got my right rear off the cushion trying to clear him and I got up into the loose stuff and lost a few positions.”
Scelzi ended with a seventh-place result, which marked his third top 10 of the season.
He hopped in his Roth Motorsports backed, family owned sprint car on Saturday at Stockton Dirt Track for the first of two World of Outlaws races at the track.
“We didn’t time in very well,” he said. “Then in the heat race we passed a bunch of cars and ended one spot out of the transfer. We had to pass a lot of really good race cars in the heat race and the Last Chance Showdown.”
After timing in 34th quickest during qualifying and rallying from ninth to sixth place in a heat race, Scelzi was relegated toward the back of the Last Chance Showdown. He maneuvered from 14th to ninth and missed a transfer to the feature by a handful of positions.
The weekend concluded on Sunday at Stockton Dirt Track, where Scelzi qualified 26th quickest. He placed sixth in a heat race to miss a lock-in position to the feature by only one spot for the second straight night. However, Scelzi advanced from sixth to third place in the Last Chance Showdown to garner a transfer.
“The track was a lot slower on Sunday so that helped us,” he said. “The slicker the race track the better we seem to be. I was running fifth for a while and I got the top working in turns one and two when nobody was up there, which helped me get up to third.
“In the main event the track was really, really slick and we struggled with forward bite. When you’re back there in the back you don’t get clean air and it can be tough to put together good laps.”
Scelzi started 24th and he maneuvered toward the top 15 before ending with a 20th-place finish.
He is slated to race for Monhoff on Friday at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., before returning to the quarter-mile track on Saturday in his family car for the Mini Gold Cup with the World of Outlaws. Scelzi will wrap up the weekend on Sunday at Antioch Speedway in Antioch, Calif., with the Outlaws.
