Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (March 17, 2015) – Chase Johnson is ecstatic following his World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series debut last weekend at Thunderbowl Raceway.
“I think the biggest thing was the progress and improvements we made throughout the weekend,’ he said. “That’s really what we set out to do. Our goal was that every time we hit the track to improve and that’s what we did. It was a lot of learning for myself, the car and the crew.”
Johnson kicked off the doubleheader, which was co-sanctioned by the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series, by qualifying 39th quickest on Friday in the Shawn and Cindy Thomas owned sprint car. Johnson then finished 10th in a heat race and fourth in the C Main to miss a transfer by only two positions.
“I thought I put in a pretty good qualifying lap and was expecting to come off in the top 20,” he said. “Those Outlaws guys are tough and there definitely weren’t any slacks. It was a pretty stout field. We would have liked to do better on the opening night, but we still made progress from when we event out in qualifying to when we finished the C Main.”
The team returned to the third-mile oval on Saturday, when Johnson qualified 28th quickest before he placed eighth in a heat race.
“On the first lap I made a move for sixth and I got together with Jacob Allen,” he said. “I got the bad end of the stick and got a little sideways down the back straightaway and a couple of guys got around me.”
That relegated Johnson to the Last Chance Showdown, in which he placed ninth.
“We passed a few cars in the beginning and then a few passed me back,” he said. “We dodged a few wrecks. We definitely can’t complain. I was running with a lot of the guys I will run with this season with the King of the West. I think we finished right behind Bud Kaeding and Jonathan Allard.
“The results showed our improvement. We had a lot better setup in the car and I felt about 10 times more comfortable in the car. I’m looking to carry that on throughout the rest of the season. With us being a new team and me being a new 410 driver we can only continue to improve.”
Johnson is scheduled to compete this Saturday and Sunday at Stockton Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., for the FVP Western Spring Shootout with the World of Outlaws.
