Inside Line Promotions – CHICO, Calif. (March 10, 2015) – The 2015 season has started on a high note for Dominic Scelzi, who achieved a new feat last week during his first race of the season with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series.
Scelzi powered his Roth Motorsports backed sprint car from 20th to a ninth-place result last Wednesday during the FVP Outlaw Showdown at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas in Las Vegas to garner the Hard Charger Award. It also marked Scelzi’s best career result with the premier sprint car series.
“This is the year we as a team need to make our own luck,” he said. “We went out and did that on Wednesday night. I feel like every night this year we need to do everything in our power to put ourselves in the right position to earn great results.”
Wednesday started with Scelzi qualifying 20th quickest. He then finished sixth in a heat race, which was only one position shy of locking into the main event. It relegated him to the Last Chance Showdown, which Scelzi finished third in to transfer into the main event.
“I could go high or low in the feature,” he said. “I was really good throughout the main event. We were able to get up through there and pass some really good guys.
“The track was definitely different. Turns one and two were slick and wide. Turns three and four were pretty hooked up and rough. Our car was really good through the ruts and even better through the slick.”
Scelzi, who maneuvered from 20th to ninth, returned to the half-mile track on Thursday. However, his team found a mechanical issue that forced them to swap engines prior to the event.
Scelzi timed in 27th quickest and he finished sixth in a heat race for the second straight night to narrowly miss a lock-in position to the feature. He then spent the Last Chance Showdown battling for a transfer position, but came up one spot short at the checkered flag.
“The track was nice, slick and wide,” he said. “We had a green-white-checkered finish. We battled for it, but it wasn’t enough. The car felt great and I did all I could as a driver. While it wasn’t the outcome we wanted, we learned a lot and made huge strides from last year.”
Scelzi closed the weekend on Saturday at Silver Dollar Speedway, where he drove for Dan Monhoff during the Silver Cup. Scelzi qualified eighth quickest and finished fourth in a heat race to lock into the main event.
Unfortunately, he was caught up in a crash only a handful of laps into the feature and was credited with a 16th-place result.
“The car felt really good,” he said. “We got up to ninth in three laps and we were really, really fast. A guy a couple of cars ahead of us hit a hole, bounced up in the air and landed on top of us. It was just bad luck.”
Scelzi will return to competition in his family owned sprint car this Friday and Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., with the World of Outlaws and King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series.
