Glenpool, Ok. (March 3, 2015) Matt Covington’s journey to Florida with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by MAVTV American Real came to a close this past Friday at Bubba Raceway Park.
Covington’s first trip to Bubba Raceway Park in the T&L Foundry / A-Rock Materials Triple X was not what he hoped for but under the circumstances was close to what could be expected.
Matt started deep in the heat after the pill draw. With minimal passing opportunities Covington wasn’t able to advance but a couple spots in the heat. The heat results would put him in the B-Main for the night. Matt was able to advance in the B-Feature but not far enough to earn the needed transfer. Covington had to use his first Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour provisional of the year. After starting 24th in the main, Matt would do what he could to fight the rubber and advance but ultimately come home 21st.
"We had a good car this past weekend at Bubba’s," said Covington. "We didn’t get the best pill draw and was not able to move forward in the heat which put us in the B. We started outside the transfer in the B and about the only way to pass were sliders. We ended up having to use a provisional to get in the A and having to start in the back with the rubber during the feature was a challenge. To be honest the car felt good, but you just couldn't pass. If you missed your marks at all or got in too hard then you were going backwards and giving up spots you had already gained. We did what we could to pass and ended up 21st. The next night got rained out and it was time to head home. We learned a lot in Florida and if we come back next year with a little better luck, I think we will have a lot better results.”
Matt will compete on March 13 and 14 with the ASCS Red River Region at Flint Creek Speedway in West Silaom Springs, Okla. and Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla. in preparation for the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour's return to the Devil's Bowl Speedway the following weekend.
"I'm looking forward to racing around home with the Red River Region then going to Mesquite the weekend after.” stated Covington. “We're always fast and run good at the bowl and excited to get back there. We will try a few things at these regional races and then hopefully be prepared to go back to Devils Bowl and defend our last National tour win at that place.”
