Inside Line Promotions – STOCKTON, Calif. (March 1, 2015) – Giovanni Scelzi registered a top five during his first micro sprint race since scoring a Golden Driller in January.
Scelzi powered to a fifth-place result out of 25 competitors on a fast track Saturday at Delta Speedway, where he kicked off his outdoor season following the biggest win of his career two months ago.
“It was really fun,” he said. “We were trying some different things with bars and trying a few new things. It rained that morning and the track had a lot of grip in it. With what we did the car had a lot of drive, almost too much drive. It was driving so hard off the left rear it was so tight it didn’t want to turn.”
Scelzi qualified 11th quickest because of the early setup issue.
“That started us behind the eight ball,” he said. “We made some changes and it was better in the heat race. By the main event we were really good.”
Scelzi won his heat race from the pole, which locked him into the 11th starting position for the main event.
“The track was really, really narrow so you had to get everything you could on the starts,” he said. “There wasn’t much passing.”
Scelzi took advantage of the cars being bunched together on the initial start and restarts to pick up a half-dozen positions en route to a fifth-place finish.
“I’m really happy with it,” he said. “I just wish we could have started in the top three or four rows. But when you qualify bad that’s going to happen. I think we learned some valuable lessons. I think we have quite a few things figured out.”
He is scheduled to return to action on March 20 at Delta Speedway.
