Brian Brown – Lucky 13th at Sedalia!

[i (Bill W) August 24, 2009]

Brian Brown picked up his thirteenth career win at the State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, Missouri on Sunday. The event was co-sanctioned by the ASCS-Midwest and Winged Outlaw Warriors series. The win followed a fifth place finish Saturday night at the Jackson Nationals for the Brian Brown Racing SuperClean #21 team. The focus will return to the Knoxville Raceway this weekend, as Brian is just 69 points out of the lead with two shows to go.

The three-race weekend produced a long tow from Jackson, Minnesota back to central Missouri early Sunday morning. “First off, I have to thank my crew guys for working their tails off,” says Brian. “We got back home from Jackson Sunday morning about 9 a.m., and they went right back to it getting ready for Sedalia.”

The Factory Value Parts paint scheme adorned the #21 all weekend, and Brian showed some dominance early in the heat race on the State Fair ½ mile, running from 7th to 2nd. “We were really good in the heat,” he says. “It’s always fun to go to Sedalia, and run in front of some of our great partners from there like Ditzfeld Transfer and Impact Sign and Lighting. Sedalia is down to running one show a year, so you want to take advantage of every race they have there and win it.”

The bad draw luck continued, but Brian was able to run from 8th to the front in two laps. “We were able to draw 8 out of 8,” he jokes. “The seas kind of parted for us there on the start, and we were able to get by Austen Wheatley into second on the first lap. They had a red on the next lap, and we were able to get by Jack (Dover) on the restart. We kind of cruised for awhile, and they said I was up by as much as a straightaway at one point. Lapped traffic became an issue. It was tough. They were running their race, and I was trying to run mine, but (Jesse) Hockett was catching us. We had a late restart, and we were able to pull away.”

The team headed to Jackson, Minnesota in search of the $5,000 top prize on Saturday. The two-night show kicked off Friday with a heat race win. “We were lucky with the draw on Friday,” says Brian. “We won from outside of row two, but their passing points system is a little different. That was only good for eighth most points on the night.”

Brian finished fifth after starting eighth in Friday’s main event. “It was pretty tough to pass out there,” he says. “The track has been reconfigured, and a lot of the banking was taken away. It is a lot smoother; it was just pretty narrow out there. It was a bad deal to finish one spot out of fourth and not get ourselves locked in for Saturday.”

The Grain Valley, Missouri driver drew the fourth starting spot for his Saturday heat. “We were up to second, and Jake (Peters) snuck by us late,” says Brian. “That was a crucial deal. We would have maybe made the dash, or worst case scenario, the first four rows of the feature. One corner was pretty dry-slick and the other was a little heavier. We tried to keep it free enough for the heavy end, but that killed us in the slick.”

Instead of starting towards the front, Brian lined up fifteenth. He made an admirable charge before the track became one-lane. In the end, he would be fifth. “We were actually really good,” he says. “We were eighth three laps in. That’s the point that it took rubber. We really wanted to go to Jackson and take that trophy and money back to Missouri, it just wasn’t meant to be this year.”

Brian's Q&A
Ernie Lovell in Sedalia asks: You seem to be in a class of your own at Sedalia. What do you like about that track?

Brian answers: It’s the first place I ever drove at. We used to go there all the time. It just fits my driving style. Sometimes you win there blasting around the top, but most of the time, you have to slow down and run the bottom. It’s just tough to run the straights at 130 m.p.h., then go 40 through the corners.
