Inside Line Promotions – TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 23, 2015) – Caleb Helms is looking forward to racing this weekend now that the kinks are out of the way.

Helms kicked off his season last weekend at East Bay Raceway Park, where his team built momentum throughout the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour Ronald Laney Memorial tripleheader. He will return to action this Friday and Saturday with the series at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Fla.

“I felt like we had good speed,” he said. “We just didn’t have great starting spots. It was good to get back in the seat. It was fun. I feel like we’ll be pretty competitive going to Ocala.”

Helms opened the Ronald Laney Memorial last Thursday by finishing fifth in a heat race, which relegated him to a B Main. Unfortunately, Helms was caught up in a crash during the consolation race and he was unable to continue racing that night.

“You could tell the first night we were just getting back in the rhythm,” he said. “However, in the B Main we were competitive again. Somebody just spun out in front of us and we really didn’t have anywhere to go. I tried to miss him and he slid backwards. I went between him and the wall and the wall knocked the front axle out. That really hurt us in points.”

He returned to East Bay Raceway Park on Friday for the second round of competition, which Helms started by advancing from seventh to fifth place in a heat race. That sent him into a B Main, which he finished fifth in to narrowly miss a transfer into the main event.

The Ronald Laney Memorial concluded on Saturday. Helms rallied from seventh to fifth place in a qualifier, which lined him up on the outside of the fifth row in a B Main.

“The track got moved up all the way to the wall and there was a hole in turn two,” he said. “I probably didn’t run it right the first time and I tried to do all kinds of things to get through it.”

Helms finished 10th in the consolation race to end the weekend.

“I don’t think the results showed our progress last weekend,” he said. “We had a couple of good runs and a lot of good time on the track. We’re really looking forward to racing this weekend in Ocala.”
