Inside Line Promotions – TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 19, 2015) – Josh Baughman is excited to focus on the start of the sprint car season following a disappointing Chili Bowl.
Baughman, who was driving for Andrew Felker Racing, ended the 29th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals last weekend at Tulsa Expo Raceway inside the River Spirit Expo Center by spinning out in a G Main on Saturday.
“We spun out passing for the lead in the G Main,” he said. “I really don’t know what happened. I got to his door and it was either hit him or spin out. We were definitely better than last year. I think this year going into next year’s Chili Bowl we are going to run a couple of races with Andrew that way we have more laps.”
The event started out promising for Baughman, who advanced from seventh to fifth place during his heat race on Thursday’s preliminary competition. He then placed ninth in a qualifier, which relegated him toward the back of a B Main.
“In the qualifier it was pretty narrow and we weren’t able to get many cars,” he said. “We went into the B Main and it was a mess. I think that’s the longest race I’ve been in in my life. Guys were running over each other on the starts and we were behind them all. We had to spin to avoid crashing a couple of times. Then we had a fuel leak so we had to pull off.”
Baughman capped his preliminary night with an 11th-place result in the consolation race.
The focus now shifts toward the start of the sprint car season, which is slated to begin Feb. 19-21 at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, Fla., for the Ronald Laney Memorial with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour
“Now I’m back in my comfort zone,” he said. “I’m just happy to get back in a winged car where we can continue our momentum from 2014.”
Baughman is coming off a career-best season with two feature victories, six top fives and 15 top 10s.
