Dupo, IL (January 8, 2015) Last week, Schuett Racing, Inc driver, Kyle Schuett made his rookie appearance at the Tulsa Shootout. What is the Tulsa Shootout and just how hard is the competition? With over 1,000 entries amongst nearly 550 drivers, the Tulsa Shootout is the micro-sprint world equivalent to the Chili Bowl Nationals. After four days of competition, every class is dwindled down to one winner of a Golden Driller trophy. Kyle entered the event in both the Winged Outlaw class and the Non-Winged Outlaw class in his number 19K Boss chassis.
A simple pill draw dictates where a driver will line up in heat race events; once those heat races start, everything else for the weekend is dictated by passing points and finishing position. As a result of his pill draw, Kyle started XX in heat race number 16 of 21 for the Winged Outlaw class. When the checkered flag flew, Kyle crossed the finish line in second position. Based on passing points from all the heat races, this put Kyle lining up ninth in Friday’s Outlaw qualifier number six. After a hard fought race, Kyle ended up improving two positions to finish seventh. After totaling up his passing points from Thursday’s heat race and Friday’s qualifier, Kyle would miss the cutoff for the A-main lock in, but did find himself earning a third starting position for the seventh B-feature. The Shootout format has competitors run a B-feature with the top two transferring to a last chance qualifier; Kyle started third and finished third in the B-feature event. By missing the transfer spot, Kyle’s Shootout in the Winged Outlaw Class was over, but definitely ended with some very respectable runs against the best micro racers in the country.
A similar format was used for the Non-Winged Outlaw class as well. Using the same car and motor, Kyle found himself not having as good of a Shootout in his non-wing events as he would have liked. In heat race action, Kyle failed to finish the race and was scored with an eighth place finish. As a result of minimal passing points from the heat race, Kyle was relegated to run a C-main, where he again failed to finish and was scored with a sixth place finish. At that time, the team decided to focus on the Winged Outlaw division where Kyle was having much greater success.
Considering the number of competitors and the amount of competition that each class had for the 30th Annual Tulsa Shootout, the Schuett team faired very well in their first Shootout experience. Kyle and the team will now have a few short months off before returning to racing action with the Lucas Oil POWRi Midget series and the Speedway Motors POWRi Micro series. In 2015, Kyle will pilot an Esslinger powered Boss midget chassis in an attempt to capture the highly competitive POWRi Rookie of the Year honors.
