Starks Highlights Trip to Australia With Top 10 at Murray Bridge Speedway

Inside Line Promotions – WARRNAMBOOL, Victoria, Australia (Jan. 8, 2015) – Trey Starks has returned to the United States following a couple of weeks in Australia.

Starks scored a top 10 and two top 15s in four races at different tracks with the World Series Sprintcars in the ‘Land Down Under.’

“Our struggle with the whole trip was qualifying,” he said. “We weren’t qualifying great, but when it came time to race we were pretty good.”

The trip kicked off Dec. 26 at Speedway City in Adelaide, South Australia, where Starks qualified 34th quickest. He finished second in both of his heat races before advancing from 14th to eighth place in the B Main, which was two positions shy of a transfer.

“It was ok for our first night,” he said. “I ended up getting to the track late so we got behind schedule and then we had a few issues that night.”

His best performance of his trip came the following night at Murray Bridge Speedway in Murray Bridge, South Australia. Starks timed in 29th quickest and he finished fourth and third, respectively, in his heat races. He then maneuvered from 12th to fourth in the B Main and from 18th to an eighth-place result in the main event.

“I’d say Murray Bridge was our best run,” he said. “It was one of the smallest tracks we raced on, but it was really high banked and wide. It reminded me of something like River Cities Speedway (in Grand Forks, N.D.). I think it suited my driving style.”

Unfortunately, an engine issue during hot laps ended his night early at Borderline Speedway in Mount Gambier, South Australia on Dec. 28.

“The first couple of nights went well, but we broke an engine on the third night,” he said. “We had to rent an engine for the next two races. There weren’t many options. We were running on a steel block motor, which is 100 pounds heavier on the nose. It was all we had.”

Starks competed at Avalon Speedway in Lara, Victoria, on Dec. 30. He qualified 25th quickest and placed fifth and second, respectively, in heat races. Starks rallied from 11th to fourth in the B Main and from 18th to 12th in the main event.

The trip ended on Jan. 1 at the famed Premier Speedway, which is the only track Starks had previously competed on. However, a 42nd-place qualifying run put him behind the eight ball for the entire night.

Starks moved from 12th to ninth in his first heat race and from 11th to seventh in his second heat, but was relegated to a C Main. He ended eighth in that race to cap his trip a few spots shy of a transfer.

“The track was pretty narrow and hooked up,” he said. “Our nose wing ended up falling down so we went from tight to super tight. It just wasn’t our night, but we got some good racing in and saw some new tracks. We had some times we raced well. We just needed to work on our qualifying.”

Starks will make his debut in the United States on March 4-5 at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas in Las Vegas for the FVP Outlaw Showdown with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series.
