Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (Dec. 8, 2014) – John Binz is banking on 2014 being a breakout season.
Binz was only able to compete in a dozen micro sprint events throughout the year because of limited funding. However, he recorded his first two victories and a top-five finish in half of his races.
“I would have liked to race more often, but I’m happy that I won a couple of races to get that out of the way,” he said. “Other than a few DNFs because of bad luck on the race track we were strong every time we hit the track.”
Binz scored his first career micro victory on Sept. 5 when he drove from sixth to capture the triumph at Mountain Creek Speedway in Grand Prairie, Texas. He topped that exactly three weeks later by charging from 10th to win at the same track.
“Winning once was a dream come true, but to win back-to-back races was a big boost,” he said. “I had been so close to winning several times and to get over the hump and then win again the next time out was great.”
Binz, who is a long-time crew member for sprint car driver Travis Rilat, is planning on racing more in 2015. Whether he will run for points at any track is up in the air, he said, but the goal is to compete in a lot more than 12 races.
“It’s hard to race once a month and be super competitive,” he said. “We were able to do that this year so if I could race at least a couple of times each month I think we can have a very successful 2015 season.”
Binz added that he is very grateful for the support of his sponsors, family, friends and girlfriend.
“I wouldn’t have had the success I did in the limited amount of races this year without their help,” he said. “They all mean a lot to me and if I can find another sponsor or two I think we are set up to have a great year.”
