Brady Bacon – Keeping it Rolling with USAC!

(Bill W) June 23, 2014 – It was a solid weekend for Brady Bacon and the Hoffman Racing #69 team. The USAC National Sprint Car Series point leaders registered a pair of top four finishes in the Upper Midwest. This week, the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver puts the wing on the Brady Bacon #99 and heads to Ohio and Pennsylvania Speedweeks.

After getting fogged out at the Superior Speedway in Superior, Wisconsin on Friday, the series headed to Deer Creek Speedway near Spring Valley, Minnesota on Saturday. “We qualified second,” says Brady. “I think we were off of quick time by eight-thousandths of a second. We were right there. We’re still right there in qualifying every night.”

He would start sixth in his heat. “The track was a little hard-packed for us, but with the banking we had more grip than we all though even as dry as it was,” says Brady. “I was up to third, but I got a little cautious and (Bryan) Clauson got by us and we finished fourth.”

Brady was scheduled to start fifth in the main event. “Clauson broke there, so we started fourth,” he says. “I was riding in fourth, and Dave (Darland) and I were working on CJ Leary. He got into a lapped car and we narrowly missed that. That put us in third. I think we had a little better car than Dave, but the groove was right there on top. I needed him to make a mistake so I could slide him, and he never did. We were working on him at the end, but we had some lapped cars in the way.”

Sunday marked a historic night for USAC when they visited the famed Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Brady would set a new track record at 13.880. “I hadn’t been there since they put new dirt on it and took the infield guard rail out,” he says. “We had a little rain shower the first time we tried to qualify. They reworked the track and we came back out. We were able to set a new track record. We were really good there.”

Brady lined up outside row three for his heat race. “The track was pretty slick in the heat,” he says. “The dirt is a lot different than before. There was more dust and it was sandier. We were able to get up to second behind Tracy (Hines). We started on the outside which helped us, especially at the beginning.”

He would also line up sixth for the main event. “It took a while for everyone to get going,” says Brady. “The track was a little dirty at the start, and everyone was tiptoeing around trying to figure out where the cushion was going to be developing. We got pretty good after that.”

Brady started moving forward at that point. “I was able to get by Darland on a restart and get into fourth,” he says. “We had a red, and right before that, we lost a cylinder. We were a little worried about that. We were able to get going again though, and we got by Leary for third on the next restart. The motor still wasn’t running, and I got preoccupied with checking the gauges. (Chris) Windom snuck by me there and we ended up fourth. Hopefully, the motor’s not too bad. The temperature was normal and we still had oil pressure, so hopefully, it’s not terrible.”

Brady is now 48 points ahead of Darland in the USAC point standings. “It was a good solid weekend,” he says. “We gained some points on second, but I’m sure (Jon) Stanbrough gained some on us winning both nights. We’ve been running well. It makes it a lot easier coming to the track when you know you’re going to have a car that runs up front.”

Brady’s busy schedule with Ohio and Pennsylvania Speedweek starts Wednesday in Ohio at Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe. From there, he’ll go to Fremont Speedway Thursday, before heading to Pennsylvania Speedweek at Williams Grove Speedway near Mechanicsburg Friday, Lincoln Speedway near Abbottstown Saturday and Path Valley Speedway near Dry Run on Sunday. That Speedweek will pick up again next Tuesday.
