(Bill W) November 25, 2014 – The early part of the season was rough for Brian Brown Racing and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team. A pair of crashes in California slowed the team, but perseverance paid off when they arrived back in the Midwest. They were sailing by May, winning three straight 410 events at the Knoxville Raceway. In early July, they picked up the Folken Brothers Trucking Jackson Speedway Spring Nationals worth $10,000.
You had a rough trip to say the least out west with the Outlaws in the spring. You did record a second place finish at the Calistoga Speedway in California.
That second place at Calistoga was really the highlight of the whole trip. We were leading the Dash at Tucson and that big gust of wind came and blew three out of the top five drivers into the fence there. We destroyed that car, and then I nearly killed myself at Tulare. The Calistoga finish gave us a little money to get home on.
I know your team was behind you while you were healing up from your crash.
The West Coast deal is always for FVP. We love to go out there and see the customers and employees we only get to see once a year. I think the whole trip really told me a lot about our whole operation. To have people like Joel (Quetschenbach) from FVP, and Don Lamberti and Bob Myers from Casey’s call and say they are behind you 100%...they wanted to make sure first and foremost, that I was healthy. They let me know if we wanted to sit out and rest, that I should. They were looking out for me as a person, first and foremost and that is cool.
You came back to the Midwest, and it was like you were back on your 2013 pace, when you won sixteen races.
When you crash two nights in a row, it’s really easy to say it’s going to be one of those years. But our guys, Chad (Morgan) and Zac (Thomas) did a good job of putting California behind us and it was time to regroup. That’s a testament to a great team.
You ripped off three straight at Knoxville in the 410 class in May.
We had a pretty good package at Knoxville. Our goal was to make our program better. The three nights we won in a row there with a 410…we went to the track with three different ideas in mind as far as our setup and things. We were just trying to get better. We were able to win those three, and we were able to get a 360 win. I think it was the first time since 1996 that someone had won three in a row (Danny Lasoski). That says a lot about our team. We learned that what we had was pretty good.
You also have had an incredible record at Jackson Speedway in Minnesota the last few years, and you picked up the Jackson Spring Nationals again.
I believe that was the third year in a row that we were able to win that. The Folken Brothers Trucking guys make that a great event. There are always good purses and great contingencies at that race. There are a lot of great fans of ours up at Jackson as well, and we like to get up there as much as possible. It was $10,000 to win this year, and that was special too.
Next week in Part 2, we’ll talk to Brian about the team as it heads into Southern Iowa Sprintweek!
