TULSA, Okla. (November 18, 2014) After the legality of the Spec Heads utilized by Jason Johnson during the 2014 season finale at the Cocopah Speedway in Yuma, Ariz. on Saturday, November 15, 2014 was brought into question by formal protest, a review by Brodix, who is the primary manufacturer of the ASCS Spec Cylinder Head, has revealed the Heads to be within the rules set forth by the American Sprint Car Series, and have deemed Jason Johnson the 2014 Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series National Champion.
Following the protest by Jeff Swindell, who finished the 2014 season 15 points behind Johnson, the Heads from the No. 41 were confiscated by ASCS, and brought to the Brodix offices in Mena, Ark. for inspection. The Heads in question were transported by ASCS Competition Director, Matt Ward, from the Cocopah Speedway and arrived at the Brodix offices on Tuesday, November 18, 2014.
Just after 2:30 P.M. (CT) on Tuesday, November 18, 2014, the call was made from Brodix, by Matt Ward to Jason Johnson, that the Heads had checked legal.
According to Ward, who oversaw the tech of the head by Greg Brotherton, the Heads in question were above board. “The Ford Head can’t flow over 200cc, Jason’s flowed 195cc. They checked Valve angle, compared to a stock Ford Head and it was spot on. They also checked all the allowed porting and everything was within the rules."
The 2014 Championship by Johnson marks the fifth time the Eunice, Louisiana driver has captured the Lucas Oil ASCS National Championship.
“It was an unbelievable season,” said Johnson. “Maybe not the ideal season we imagined, but I’m proud of this Stenhouse, Jr. Racing team for keeping their heads in the game, and for all our supports for staying with us week in, and week out and begin there when it came down to crunch time.”
With the 2014 season in the books, officials with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series are hard at work preparing the 2015 lineup, which begins with the $10,000-to-win, Ronald Laney Memorial at Tampa's East Bay Raceway February 19-21, 2015. The complete scheduled will be released at the 2014 Performance Racing Industries Tradeshow in Indianapolis, Ind.
