Tankersley Closes Season This Weekend at Cocopah Speedway With ASCS National Tour

Inside Line Promotions – LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Nov. 12, 2014) – Channin Tankersley is down to only one weekend of racing remaining this season.

Tankersley will drive for Bruce Griffith this Friday and Saturday at Cocopah Speedway in Somerton, Ariz., during the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour’s season finale. The Cocopah Cup Challenge will mark Tankersley’s first time at the 3/8-mile track.

“We’ve had such a good year up to this point,” he said. “We’ve had really, really good speed and we’re running with these national guys. We can’t seem to catch a break or put a whole night together. Hopefully we can end the season with a couple of good finishes.”

Tankersley is coming off a rough weekend with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

On Friday, he advanced from eighth to fifth place in his heat race to earn the 12th starting position for the main event at El Paso Speedway Park in El Paso, Texas. Unfortunately, a mechanical issue sidelined him early in the feature.

“We were moving forward in the A Main,” he said. “The cam spud stripped out for some odd reason. Everything on these cars is driven off the cam or the crank. It’s all kind of connected. When the cam spud strips out you lose your turning power and that’s what turns the fuel pump.”

Tankersley followed the DNF with more bad luck on Saturday at Southern New Mexico Speedway. He started eighth in a heat race for the second straight night, but endured a violent finish on the final lap.

“I was up to fifth, which was probably going to put us midpack in the A Main,” he said. “Two cars in front of me got together. I checked up a little to see if I could shoot to the bottom. When I did the thing biked up and I went flipping.”

Tankersley didn’t finish the heat race and he was unable to start the B Main. He was granted a provisional based on car owner points to tag the back of the field for the main event.

“We got everything fixed and were able to take a provisional,” he said. “As soon as we took the green the car was so far out of whack. I didn’t want to crash it again so I pulled off about five laps in.”
