Inside Line Promotions – STOCKTON, Calif. (Nov. 3, 2014) – Chase Johnson put together a strong performance on Sunday to wrap up his sprint car season.
Despite a rough track, Johnson rallied from the B Main to a 12th-place result during the California Civil War Sprint Car Series main event at the Stockton Dirt Track.
“We were really good in hot laps and then the track got rougher and rougher as each car went out during qualifying,” he said. “On the first lap the ruts got the best of us coming out of turn four and made the car upset. That’s something you can’t afford to do on the bigger tracks like Stockton.”
Johnson timed in 25th quickest during qualifying, which lined him up on the inside of the fourth row for his heat race.
“We had a really, really tough heat,” he said. “We were running fifth and then going down the front straightaway the steering box broke. I came to a stop and got towed off the track. We weren’t able to fix it and go back out.”
That relegated him to the 10th starting position in the B Main, which transferred the top six to the main event.
“We picked off most of the cars on the opening laps and then we settled in fifth and stayed there,” he said.
Johnson’s fifth-place result in the consolation race transferred him into the back of the 30-lap feature, which he started on the inside of the 12th row.
“We tried changing a bar, which was pretty dramatic, but it helped with how rough the track conditions were,” he said. “We started really deep and kept our nose clean. The crew put a great car underneath me and we were able to move forward. I was able to make some moves and passes in traffic.”
Johnson rallied into the top 10 before the front wing on his sprint car broke during the closing laps.
“It got stuck right in my view,” he said. “It was stuck on the top wing because the air was holding it there. It was taking up half of my vision so I had to slow up and I got passed.”
His 12th-place result marked the 24th top 15 this season.
Johnson is scheduled to finish his 2014 season in a micro sprint owned by Steve Kaiser on Nov. 14-15 at Plaza Park Raceway in Visalia, Calif.
