Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (Oct. 21, 2014) – Jack Dover extended his top-10 streak to 11 straight races on the opening night of the 41st annual Winter Nationals last weekend, when track conditions and a loose car plagued his overall results at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
Dover opened the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour doubleheader on Friday by charging from seventh to second place during his heat race, which locked him into the feature redraw as the driver with the most points.
“The car was really loose in hot laps,” he said. “We tightened it up a bunch for the heat race and I think we made the right call. We got two cars on the start and then we picked one off per lap. I could go wherever I wanted. I think everyone wasn’t as tight.”
Dover drew the No. 6 in the random redraw, which lined him up on the outside of the third row for the main event.
“We ran good for the first half of the race,” he said. “About halfway through we lost the fuel load and the car got too loose. I was up to fourth at one point and then I started falling back slowly in the second half of the race.”
Dover held on to score a ninth-place result, which marked his 11th consecutive top 10.
He returned to the half-mile oval on Saturday and finished where he started – second – in a heat race.
“I tightened the car up, but not enough,” he said. “I led the first lap and was running the top. Jeff Swindell was running the bottom and he got by me. I moved down to the bottom after he passed me, but I couldn’t make up any ground.”
That locked Dover into the feature, which he started on the outside of the seventh row.
“It was probably one of the most boring races I’ve been in all year,” he said. “The whole A Main was around the bottom. There was no time we went to the middle or the top. If you were lucky enough to get by a car that was the only way you’d make a pass.”
Dover managed to work his way into the top 10 before a late restart.
“We were up to ninth at one point,” he said. “On the last restart I went in the middle of turns one and two trying to pass guys because they were bunching up. It almost worked. By the time I got off turn two I wasn’t low enough and a couple of guys snuck by me on the bottom.”
Dover ended with an 11th-place finish.
He will take the next two weekends off before ending his season at the World Finals Nov. 6-8 at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Concord, N.C., with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series.
