It’s again time for the Winternationals at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, and the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team is ready. The event sanctioned by the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series will commence this Friday and Saturday night. The Knoxville, Iowa driver made a charge in the feature in Miles Hill’s #77x at last Saturday’s World of Outlaws event at Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge, New York.
A 22nd quick effort is tough with the Outlaws, but that’s how Wayne’s night started at Rolling Wheels. “It’s hard going into a one-race deal like that,” he says. “Everything is new. The cars are different. We’ve been really good, though. We just struggled a little early. When you struggle qualifying with the Outlaws, you’re left behind. You have to be on your game from the get-go.”
He would finish seventh in the heat, before heading to the B. “We missed the transfer spot by one in the heat,” says Wayne. “We were just way too tight in the B, but we were able to get through there (finishing fifth).”
Starting 23rd, he would move up to 17th in the main event. “We got the car a lot better, and got going there come feature-time,” says Wayne. “We passed quite a few cars. It’s a hard place to pass, so that was good.”
Wayne gained speed as the night went on. “Lap time-wise, we weren’t up to the leaders standards, but we were right there with sixth on back,” he says. “The car was really good by the end of the night.”
The team hopes the momentum they’ve had lately, carries to one of the Oklahoma transplant’s home away from home, the Devil’s Bowl Speedway near Mesquite, Texas. “We’re looking forward to Devil’s Bowl on Friday and Saturday night,” says Wayne. “We feel like that’s one of our home tracks, so hopefully, we can get another win or two this weekend.”
