Tuesdays with TMAC – Trophy Cup Week!
(Bill W) October 14, 2014 – Terry McCarl and the Country Builders Construction #88 team are preparing for this week’s Trophy Cup at the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, California. The Altoona, Iowa driver is ready for one of the crown jewels of 360 racing. Last Friday night, he was aboard the Jimmy Davies #99 in MOWA action at the Lincoln Speedway in Illinois.
TMAC drove from eighth to fourth in his heat on Friday. “We were a little bit off in the heat race,” he says. “There’s been a little bit of a learning curve with the different shocks and things, but we were good.”
The team prepared for a feature in which they started tenth. “We knew it was probably going to lay rubber,” says TMAC. “It was unfortunate for the fans, with the midgets and all and it was a great event. I knew we didn’t have much time to get up front starting where we were.”
TMAC escaped disaster, not once, but twice. “On the first start, Christopher Bell spun in front of everyone, and by an act of God…more that than driving ability, we just missed it by an inch,” he says. “No matter what happened after that, I knew we were money ahead.”
That wasn’t all. “Then on the next start, Parker Price-Miller spun and there was nowhere to go but three feet between him and the fence,” says TMAC. “At Huset’s, I’ve driven up on the fence a few times, and we were able to save it. It was funny how your mind works and it takes you back to where you’ve been. It took me back to Huset’s and I drove two wheels up on the fence. That had me laughing in my helmet, because I definitely should have torn it up there.”
TMAC would work his way to fourth. “At the end we were starting sixth and I got a great start,” he says. “I was all over the guys in front of me, but I couldn’t do much. It laid rubber after three or four laps in three and four and it took a little longer in one and two.”
The team felt good about their efforts. “I really felt we had a car to contend,” says TMAC.
“That’s always nice when you’re driving someone else’s car. Jimmy and I really put our heads together and had a good racecar. We ended up fourth. We were all over Jerrod Hull, who was third the whole race.”
Unfortunately, a motor issue kept the team out of action on Saturday at Jacksonville Speedway. “We were really looking forward to Jacksonville and hoping to pick up a win,” says TMAC. “I had a lot of fans coming to watch that night. Unfortunately, Jimmy called me Saturday morning and we had burnt a spark plug off. There was no sense risking it, so we had to call it a weekend.”
The misfortune gave him the opportunity to head west a little early. “We left for California Sunday morning,” says TMAC. “We’re out here to run the Country Builders Construction #88 for the Offill family. Taco Bravo Racing is joining forces with us this year. Dennis Woullett is helping us out. I was able to win the last feature at San Jose Speedway driving for him. He’s a great supporter of sprint car racing and helps out Craig ‘Cowboy’ Smith too. His name will be on the front wing, and part of his sponsorship is a five gallon bucket of salsa. I’m pretty excited about that.”
In addition, it gives TMAC an opportunity to celebrate a special occasion. “We enjoy San Francisco,” he says. “We’re out here enjoying the city for our 25th Anniversary. We try to get out here at this time every year. It’s just a lot of fun. The Offill’s are like a second family to me. It’s fun to come out with the Outlaws in the spring and the Trophy Cup in the fall.”

This Month in TMAC History!
In October of 2006, TMAC finished third in WoO action at the United Sports Arizona raceway in Tucson. He trailed Donny Schatz and Brooke Tatnell at the finish. He won three features with the WoO in 2006, and eleven overall. His WoO triumphs came at Huset’s Speedway (SD), Williams Grove Speedway (PA) and at the Nodak Speedway (ND). He also recorded $10,000 paydays at East Bay Raceway Park (FL) and Volusia Speedway (FL) that season. Though missing much of that season with a broken leg, he still managed a 9th place season standing with the WoO.
