Inside Line Promotions – PETALUMA, Calif. (Oct. 13, 2014) – Chase Johnson scored a podium finish during his final race of the season in his family owned sprint car on Saturday at Petaluma Speedway.
“It was good,” he said. “It was what I hoped for, but at the same time it was tough because I really, really wanted that win.”
Johnson kicked off the Adobe Cup by qualifying second quickest.
“In qualifying we went out and broke the track record and then ended up getting our track record broken by two thousandths of a second,” he said. “That was a little tough, but I was still more than happy with starting out qualifying that way. That was by far our best qualifying effort all year. It feels like the first night in a long time we’ve started out the night good. That helped us a lot.”
Johnson then powered from fourth to a second-place finish in his heat race, which locked him into the feature inversion.
“The guy who started on the front row outside and I got a good start in the heat race,” he said. “We got the preferred line in turns one and two and drove around everyone. We set sail from there.”
The top qualifier then pulled the No. 6 for the feature inversion, which started Johnson on the inside of the third row for the 25-lap main event.
“At the beginning I struggled,” he said. “I think I played it a little too safe on the start. The car was great the entire race, but I struggled getting around some cars.”
Johnson battled for a top five throughout the main event and he reached third place with five laps remaining.
“By that time everyone was so spread out and I didn’t have anything to get by anyone else,” he said. “I definitely felt like we could have had a second-place finish if not a win. It’s great momentum and great confidence going into Trophy Cup.”
Johnson finished third, which marked his seventh top five of the season.
He will return to competition this Thursday through Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., where he will drive for Harley Van Dyke during the 21st annual Trophy Cup.
