Wampler Wraps Up Season With Top 10 During Red River Open Wheel Nationals

Inside Line Promotions – WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Oct. 12, 2014) – Cody Wampler endured a long night as he capped his return to sprint car racing on Saturday during the Red River Open Wheel Nationals at Red River Speedway.

“I got home at 5:30 in the morning and I live 45 minutes from there,” he said. “It was crazy.”

The two-day event was condensed into a one-day show following Friday’s rainout, which made for an extremely long night on Saturday.

Wampler kicked off the competition by advancing from fourth to third place during his champ sprints heat race, which relegated him to a B Main since he wasn’t in the top eight in heat race points.

“I was all over the guy for second, but I couldn’t get by him,” he said. “That didn’t give me enough passing points to make it in the top eight.”

Wampler finished second in the consolation race to transfer into the 25-lap main event, which he started on the outside of the sixth row.

“We were pretty good,” he said. “It was kind of a bottom-groove deal. I could run the bottom pretty well and was able to pick off some cars.”

Wampler rallied from 12th to a seventh-place finish, which marked his 10th top 10 of the season. It also locked him into a unique feature as the top 10 champ sprints battled the top-10 finishers in the 305ci main event.

The fans redrew for the lineup and Wampler started on the outside of the eighth row for the 25-lap feature.

“I was going forward and we were probably up to 11th about eight laps in,” he said. “We had a caution. I got a pretty good run on the restart and was on the outside. Two guys got bottled up on the inside line and some guy jumped to the outside. I jumped over his right rear and I don’t know how we didn’t turn over or get into the wall. We slammed down and I came to a stop going into turn one.”

Wampler restarted at the back, but mechanical issues a lap or two later forced him to pull off the track early.

Wampler ended his season with three top fives and 10 top 10s in 16 races following eight years away from sprint car racing.

“Overall it wasn’t bad for our first year back following an eight-year layoff,” he said. “I was pretty pleased with how we were able to run in our last couple of races. I really want to thank Charlie and Michael Brown for the chance to race again.”
