Inside Line Promotions – HIGHLANDS, Texas (Sept. 29, 2014) – Travis Rilat overcame dicey track conditions to post a runner-up result on Saturday at Battleground Speedway.
Rilat kicked off the ASCS Gulf South Region season finale by maneuvering from eighth to third place during his heat race.
“I think I got them pretty much all on the first lap,” he said. “The track was heavy. It was overcast and cool. They didn’t have many cars so the track wasn’t widening. I knew I had to pass cars on the start. I think I was fourth coming off turn two and the next corner I picked off a car for third.”
That earned Rilat a spot in the feature redraw. He pulled the No. 3 in the random draw to line up on the inside of the second row for the main event.
“It was raining pretty much the whole time during the feature,” he said. “We had a couple of cautions which allowed the track to get slimy. On a restart I didn’t get in the cushion like I should have. (Channin) Tankersley came motoring around me and Wes Miller. It was me playing it a little safe. I knew I should have went up high. I just made one mistake.”
Rilat, who had advanced into second at the start of the feature, fell to third during the restart. He then passed Miller later in the race en route to the second-place finish.
“It could have been better, but it could have been worse,” he said.
It marked Rilat’s ninth top five of the season and his seventh with the ASCS Gulf South Region.
Rilat will return to competition driving for Richard Saumure Oct. 16-18 at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., where he will make his debut at the 21st annual Trophy Cup.
