Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (Sept. 28, 2014) – Bad luck continued to haunt Trey Starks last Saturday during the season finale at Grays Harbor Raceway.
Starks, who piloted a sprint car owned by Doug Rutz, set quick time during qualifying. Since there were no heat races – the top eight in points competed in a scramble – because it was championship night, Starks lined up on the inside of the fifth row for the main event.
“We got by a couple of cars on the start and picked off one or two on a couple of restarts,” he said. “We had a red flag and my car was leaking fuel. I couldn’t really tell where it was coming from. I looked at the floor pan and couldn’t see anything. I didn’t think it was in the cockpit. I thought it was in the motor.”
Starks was up to third place when he restarted the race following the red flag.
“About two laps after the restart I hit a bump and I felt something hit my foot,” he said. “I knew that had something to do with it leaking. At that point my left shoe started filling up with fuel and I drove into the infield next to a fire truck. It’s not really fun to be sitting there with a shoe full of fuel.”
Starks pulled into the infield around the midpoint of the feature and he was credited with an 18th-place finish.
“What happened was we broke a fuel fitting,” he said. “I’ve never had that happen before. It was one of those races where you know you’re gonna win it. You know you have the fastest car. It was like a punch to the gut to have something break like that that normally wouldn’t break.
“Doug put together a great car for me again. I have to thank him for putting me in great equipment. We’ve had great runs and bad luck.”
Starks will likely be off for the next couple of weeks before racing on Oct. 16-18 at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., during the 21st annual Trophy Cup.
