Inside Line Promotions – COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (Sept. 25, 2014) – Patrick Dills capped his first year in a sprint car with another top 10 last Saturday at Cottage Grove Speedway.
Dills finished sixth during the Northwest Extreme Sprints season finale, which guided him to a third-place finish in the championship standings.
“I really wanted to end the season with a win, but we finished third in points so that was a positive,” he said.
The event kicked off with Dills qualifying fifth quickest – only one spot out of making the dash.
“I think I qualified with an 11.668 and quick time was an 11.5,” he said. “We were all pretty close.”
However, Dills struggled with traction for the remainder of the night. He dropped from second to fourth place in his heat race.
“Our setup was a little off,” he said. “We made a gear change after the heat race. I didn’t feel like the motor had what it had before. We made the gear change to get more off the corners. It still didn’t have enough off the corners in the feature. I think it was just our speed off the corner. It was lacking compared to everybody else.”
Dills, who lined up on the outside of the second row for the main event, battled for a top five throughout the feature before he finished sixth.
“I was just searching for traction coming off the corners,” he said. “I tried just about everywhere. I couldn’t really find it.”
It marked the 12th top 10 in 18 races this season for Dills.
