Covington Motorsports- GLENPOOL, Ok. (Sept. 24, 2014) After a DNF and 24th place finish on Friday, Matt Covington ended with a 13th place on Saturday to complete the Fall Brawl weekend at I-80 Speedway this past weekend.
“It was a rough weekend to say the least,” stated Covington.
On Friday night Matt started off with the 6th place heat race finish after a deep starting spot in a tough heat with a tacky, fast race track. The end result landed Matt in the night’s B-Main.
After racing up to sixth from his 12th starting spot in the in the B, Matt’s luck changed for the worst after getting collected in another racer’s accident. After the crash, Matt had to start the A-main from the 24th starting spot and take his first provisional of the season. The team scrambled to fix the wounded amount after the B, but once on the race track for the A-main it became apparent that there was a major issue with the rear-end from the previous crash. Matt ultimately had to start and park to salvage what points he could.
“We just got behind for the night with the heat race,” Matt said. “The track was still super heavy and, with it being a stout heat, we couldn’t move forward like I wanted. That just put us behind the 8-ball having to race to the front in the B and unfortunately, got caught up in some else’s wreck. We tried to get it all fixed for the A-main but just ran out of time to get it down right. And once we rolled out for the feature, I just decided to get our start points with the provisional and call it a night.”
Matt and the team loaded up after Friday’s feature and got some rest before waking up early Saturday morning and starting the repair on the car for the final night’s action.
After a front row starting position, Matt got the jump and led most of the heat before surrendering the lead late due to a failing brake caliper.
Once the race got underway, Matt went to work attempting to race his way into the top ten from the 16th starting spot. Matt had his hands full fighting a very tight race car mid corner. Covington fought hard to do all he could to advance but was only able to claw his way up to the 13th finishing position.
“
On Saturday we just missed the setup for the feature to be honest,” quoted Covington. “The track was tacky in spots and slick down the straightaways but I was just extremely tight mid corner to advance in the feature. But we did learn a few things and are gaining on my new setup. My goal right now is just to get everything ready and go to these next few races and do our best to rebound from last weekend and get us back in the top-5 where we should be and need to be.”
