Brian Brown – Hockett Memorial up Next!

(Bill W) September 22, 2014 – Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team are excited for this weekend’s Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial at the Lucas Oil Speedway near Wheatland, Missouri. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver is looking to put his name amongst the winners of the prestigious event this weekend. Last weekend’s Fall Brawl at the I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska showed promise on Saturday night, but ended upside down.

The Fall Brawl at I-80 Speedway saw record amounts paid out.

First and foremost, I want to thank Alan (Dehaii), Casey’s General Stores, Searsboro Telephone Company and all the sponsors who made that event. There are a lot of people that help make this an event and not just a race. (Phil) Durst obviously helps put up the $50,000 bonus. We’re proud to be a part of it, but it’s cool to see events like this. Thanks to I-80 for getting Saturday in after all the rain.

You drew in row four for your heat on Friday, but you were able to make the redraw.

We didn’t draw well, but we were able to get up to second. At that point, we felt decent, but not great.

You redrew a spot outside of row four for the feature.

We had a malfunction with a part in the feature that made the car really tight. We really couldn’t turn. I think we made it to fourth or fifth on the initial start, and the melee that eliminated some cars put us on the inside row. I think we restarted seventh and we were 11th or 12th by turn two. At one point, we clawed back to race for fifth, but I think we ended up eighth.

I know you were hoping to sweep both nights and take home the $50,000 bonus.

Obviously it wasn’t the way we wanted to start the weekend, because we wanted to win both nights. Sometimes you have nights like those.

They had two and a half inches of rain at the track Saturday morning. That left the track pretty fast for the heats. You started inside row three of yours.

There were six or eight feet of mud on the bottom that you couldn’t go near exiting the corner. Tony (Bruce) was on the pole, and Gage Dorr was outside front row. Sam (Hafertepe) was starting fourth, so I knew I had to get going. Sam made it three-wide on the start, and he did what any driver would do pushing the issue. It worked out for him, but it didn’t for us. With the passing point format, we started third and finished third and that put us in the B.

You were able to win the B.

We had a pretty good battle there with (Ian Madsen). We were able to get by him, and I just kind of moved around on the track to see what our car needed for the feature.

How did you like your chances of getting up front in the feature?

I felt like I was going to win it going in. The way the track was going and the way our car was operating, I thought we had a legitimate shot at winning it.

It didn’t take long for you to get in the top five.

We were able to get a good start, and pick our way through there. We could go anywhere on the track. Things were going our direction, and I think we made it from 18th to fourth in seven or eight laps.

That had to get your confidence going.

Once you get in the top five, it becomes kind of a chess match. We were o.k. sitting there and seeing how it was going to play out. I got a good run on Wayne (Johnson) going down the frontstretch and got a car length behind him. He got bottled up a little bit in the cushion in two, and I kind of lifted not to run into him. When I did that, it sucked me into the fence and over I went.

Obviously, that was a tough break for you, and Wayne ended up winning the bonus.

Congratulations to Wayne. He’s had a rough couple of years, and he’s someone who works hard at this. He deserved to win that.

There was a good crowd at I-80, and I’m sure there will be another one in Wheatland on Saturday.

It was great to have all the fans there when there was a Nebraska game down the road. It was great to get the Jesse Hockett Mr. Sprintcar award there too. That was good for us and our team. This week, it would be nice to win a race with Jesse Hockett and Daniel McMillin’s name on it. It would mean a lot to us. I think we’ve run second in that race two or three times. We’re going to go and do our best. This is an event. Dan Robinson and the folks at Lucas Oil Speedway do a great job with it. I’m just looking forward to it.
