Inside Line Promotions – PETALUMA, Calif. (Sept. 22, 2014) – Chase Johnson had a successful ending to the California Sprint Car Civil War Series event at Petaluma Speedway last Saturday.
Johnson overcame handling and horsepower issues throughout the night to post a ninth-place result, which marked his 14th top 10 of the season.
“It was a big accomplishment from turning around where we started the night,” he said. “We rolled out and were way off on the setup in hot laps. We got that figured out and went out for qualifying. I felt great in the car and didn’t notice the lack of horsepower. I was expecting the team to tell me I got quick time because that’s how good I felt.”
However, Johnson qualified 19th quickest.
“We were sitting there scratching our heads because normally we aren’t that far off the pace,” he said.
Johnson then maneuvered from sixth to fourth place during his heat race despite the lack of horsepower.
After wracking their brains and speaking with numerous other teams, Johnson and his crew found a solution only minutes before he lined up 18th in the main event.
“We figured out the barrel valve wasn’t at the correct percentage,” he said. “It was at 10 percent, but it needed to be at 20 percent. We fixed it and were back to normal in the main event.”
Johnson was on the gas once the green flag was waved to start the 30-lap feature.
“We were on the move,” he said. “We picked off quite a few cars early on. Near the beginning of the race we had quite a few yellows, which helped us out. Once we got near the front the cars were spread out and during the later part of the race there weren’t too many yellows. We were able to salvage ninth place so it was good.”
Johnson will take this weekend off before returning to Petaluma Speedway on Oct. 4 for a nonwing sprint car event.
