Inside Line Promotions – YAKIMA, Wash. (Sept. 22, 2014) – Trey Starks was close to capturing his first ASCS victory of the season last weekend during the ASCS Northwest Region season finale.

Starks, who was driving for Doug Rutz, capped the doubleheader at Central Washington State Fair Raceway on Saturday by charging from sixth to win his heat race. He then pulled the No. 1 in the feature redraw to start the main event on the pole.

“You could tell rubber was in the question (for the feature), but nobody thought it’d take rubber because they hadn’t seen it there,” he said. “I got a little jump going into the first corner. I got in a little too hard and it let (Henry Van Dam) slip back under me. We could run him down pretty good in open track. I was finding a little bit of rubber on the exits of the corners.”

Starks maintained the runner-up position for most of the first half of the race.

“Once we got into lapped traffic Colton Heath found the rubber before any of us,” he said. “He got by me and almost by Henry and then there was a caution that came out. We lined back up third and the rubber wasn’t quite all the way on the bottom yet. On the restart I bombed it through the bottom and tried to catch the rubber on the exit. We got to second and started to run Henry down. Then I don’t know if a lapped car got sideways or jumped on the brakes. It made Henry get on the brakes. We were right there too close and I didn’t have enough time to do anything. We nudged him in the left rear and spun around.”

Starks was relegated to the back following the spin near the midpoint of the race. He gained a few positions during the final half of the event to finish 13th.

The weekend opened on Friday with Starks driving from fourth to third place in his heat race. That lined him up 11th for the 30-lap feature.

“We were really fast,” he said. “We kept running up through the field. There was a lot of hard racing going on because there wasn’t a lot of room to pass. It wasn’t super narrow, but there was no place to make a move. You could get inside a guy, but you couldn’t complete a move unless you pushed the limits. The racing was really, really tight and close quarters. It got sketchy at times. We picked our way as far as we could.”

Starks maneuvered to a fourth-place result, which marked his 11th top five of the season.

He is scheduled to drive for Rutz again this Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash.
