Inside Line Promotions – COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (Sept. 17, 2014) – Last Saturday started on a positive note for Patrick Dills, who laid down his fastest career lap in qualifying at Cottage Grove Speedway.
Dills, who was racing his Northwest Extreme Sprint in the 360ci class, qualified 12th quickest against cars with approximately 200 more horsepower.
That started him on the pole of a heat race. However, heavy track conditions threw him for a loop and Dills finished fifth in his heat.
“We started off great in qualifying and then just didn’t hit it right in the heat race,” he said. “The track stayed heavy in the feature as well. It was a learning experience.”
Dills lined up on the outside of the sixth row for the start of the main event and he immediately avoided a massive crash on the frontstretch.
“We got through the crash without any problems and gained a few positions, but as the feature went on I struggled to get a hold of the track and put together consistent laps,” he said. “It was great to learn some lessons on a track like that and hopefully I can apply those the next time I’m on a heavy race track.”
Dills finished 11th.
He will return to Cottage Grove Speedway this Saturday for the Northwest Extreme Sprints season finale. Dills ranks third in the championship standings.
“I’ve had a lot of top 10s and a few top fives this season,” he said. “I’m going after my first win this weekend. That’d be pretty special to win a race in my first season in a sprint car.”
